We have had such a fun summer thus far. This week, Ryan had to take continuing education courses at Rice University to keep up his certification. As a result, we decided it would be fun to spend the day downtown in Hermann Park and then, meet up for a picnic dinner and a free night at the Children's Museum.
Well, we left around 6:30 and arrived downtown around 7:45ish a.m. The weather was still pleasant, though, muggy. We pulled out the scooters and headed for the looking pond to look at the turtles and feed the ducks. However, the ducks wouldn't come eat our bread, so we went to the bigger pond. There, we would throw in some bread and ducks, along with 50-100 little fish would come attack the bread. It was really cool. These fish were really yucky looking and not the kind you want to catch, but it was so fun to watch. That entertained the boys for quite some time.
After that, we headed to the other side where we could see more ducks. Again, the ducks weren't that into the bread. They came, but they didn't flock like we would to. Instead, we started throwing bread and in the middle of the pond was an underwater community of turtles, imbedded in the plants. Slowly, all of these turtles came from all over. At one point, we were feeding over 21 turtles. It was so cool!
Once we ran out of bread, we hit up the splash park and multiple playgrounds (There were 5 in total.).
Lunch came next and a feeding and diaper change for Ethan. Then, we bought our tickets for the train. Now, this was the saving grace for the day. The splash parks were great, but the water was hot. So . . . we rode the train. For $3, you could ride the train once. But for $6, you could ride unlimited times all day long. And the train ride is about 10-15 minutes. So . . . we just kept riding. And it really did offer relief with a slight breeze.
We decided on some popsicles after that: an Iron Man one for Davey and a snow cone for Matthew.
Next, we hit up the other splash park by the looking pond and boating pond. That was really fun for the boys. It was just so hot to where it was starting to become unbearable. After another 45 minutes of playing, we then, headed back to the train.
Yes, we rode another 2 times (making it 5 in total) and then, it was time to meet Ryan. Our thermometer on our car said it was 107 degrees outside. What?! Ryan and I were in complete disbelief. We knew it was hot, but we didn't think it was that bad. Because of the heat, though, we decided to have the picnic in the car.
Now, the children's museum pretty much backfired on us. Everyone and his mom was at the museum for free night. You couldn't hardly walk without stepping on someone or crawling over them. Our friends and us were pretty disappointed and decided that we will probably wait to go during the school year again, because there were simply too many people. But given how long we stayed down there, it really was a great day!
(And btw, our therm. wasn't wrong. Our friend's therm. said 108. Nuts, huh?!)
